- After Deng Xiaoping and Jimmy Carter finished their official
- White House talks in 1979, China's Vice Premier turned to other
- matters. He was, said the former President in last week's issue
- of Christian Century, "infatuated" with Carter's religious
- faith. The Communist leader even promised to permit Bibles back
- into China and see about legal changes to allow religious
- freedom. But when Carter asked if he'd consent to the return
- of Western missionaries, Deng refused. They were "arrogant,"
- he said, and had caused "great disturbances."
