  7.     After Deng Xiaoping and Jimmy Carter finished their official
  8. White House talks in 1979, China's Vice Premier turned to other
  9. matters. He was, said the former President in last week's issue
  10. of Christian Century, "infatuated" with Carter's religious
  11. faith. The Communist leader even promised to permit Bibles back
  12. into China and see about legal changes to allow religious
  13. freedom. But when Carter asked if he'd consent to the return
  14. of Western missionaries, Deng refused. They were "arrogant,"
  15. he said, and had caused "great disturbances."
